Greensburg Salem changes graduation plans again

Greensburg Salem School District has once again changed its plans for graduation as it adjusts to the ever-uncertain coronavirus situation.
The school will hold a Senior Salute Parade from the middle school to Offutt Field at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.
Commencement will be held at 6:45 p.m. July 9, but there are two possibilities for the location.
Plan A is to hold a modified ceremony at Offutt Field, where graduation ceremonies are traditionally held. The ceremony most likely only will be open to graduates and their immediate families, according to Superintendent Gary Peiffer.
If regulations prevent holding the ceremony at Offutt Field, the district will hold a drive-in event at Westmoreland County Community College.
“We’re trying to find a way to recognize the individual for their achievement, while still holding a ceremony following the parameters set by the CDC, with social distancing,” Peiffer said.
Much depends on how quickly Westmoreland County moves from the the yellow phase to the green phase of the state’s reopening plan. The yellow phase does not allow gatherings of more than 25 people.
“I’m hoping we progress out of yellow, because that determines how many people we can have present,” Peiffer said.
Prom has been cancelled, as has a senior ceremony meant to replace it.
Parents organized a “Celebrate Our Seniors” event Thursday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Lynch Field. Volunteers will give donated gift bags to seniors at the drive-thru event.
