Greensburg had to cancel its plans for a renovation kickoff party in Spring Avenue Park, but city officials hope residents will still share their opinions about the park’s future online.

The original plan was to host a gathering in the park Saturday afternoon with games, activities and surveys to get the community interested in the upcoming renovation, and to get people’s ideas, according to city Planning Director Jeff Raykes.

However, the recent surge of local coronavirus cases forced the city to cancel the event. Now Greensburg and project consultant Environmental Planning and Design of Pittsburgh have launched an online survey and are planning a series of online workshops so that residents can have their say.

“The project is just getting underway, but engaging people early and often is top priority,” Raykes said in a statement.

The 1.4-acre Spring Avenue Park is mostly empty, containing a small playground and a basketball hoop. The city hired EPD for $45,000 to design a new park.

The construction budget for the project is $250,000.

Renovating the park will take an estimated three years, with design work complete by January.

The online survey asks residents’ opinions on activities and features that potentially could be added to the park, such as an art installation, barbecue area and pavilion.

Planners will get feedback directly from the community at three planned virtual design workshops, according to EPD Project Manager Katie Kovalchik.

“The virtual design workshops will allow us to engage with the community within a digital work space for visual collaboration on ideas for activities, programs and design elements for Spring Avenue Park,” Kovalchik said in a statement.

The workshops are planned for Wednesday, Nov. 11 at 6:30 p.m., Friday, Nov. 13 at a time to be determined and Saturday, Nov. 14 at 10 a.m.

Those interested in taking the survey or registering for the workshops can do so at greensburgpa.org/planning-devleopment/pages/spring-ave-park-project.
