Students in the Hempfield Area School District will have the opportunity to go to prom this year after last year’s event was canceled due to covid-19.

According to a post on the district’s Facebook page, this year’s prom is scheduled for May 1 at Stratigos Banquet Centre in North Huntingdon. The event is open to seniors who can invite another Hempfield Area student or a guest from another district. Measures like social distancing and face masks will be enforced.

Other measures, like holding the grand march outdoors, are also being taken. As of now, the grand march is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. at Spartan Stadium. Two guests are permitted per student, and the event, which is weather permitting, will also be livestreamed.

Prom will run from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. Transportation will not be provided to the event.

District leaders canceled last year’s prom as much of the state was locked down to help curb the spread of the virus. At the time, officials said they would revisit hosting the event if social distancing measures were relaxed, but those orders did not come to fruition until summer.

While most proms were seemingly canceled last year, some districts got creative in how to host the event. Steel Valley High School held their prom under the Homestead Grays Bridge in the Waterfront shopping center in late June. At other districts, including Mt. Pleasant, students rallied together to host a student-run prom at The Company Stables.

At Hempfield, whose announcement came days after officials detailed plans for graduation at Spartan Stadium, tickets will go on sale March 15-23, costing $150 per couple or $75 for a single.
