Hempfield receives grant to improve park

Improvements are coming to Hempfield Park after the township received a $143,875 grant.
The funds will be used for the construction of accessible pathways and new handicapped parking spots in the park, said Aaron Siko, director of parks and recreations. Construction will start in late 2019 or early 2020.
The grant was awarded by Westmoreland County as part of the Community Development Block Grant program for the removal of architectural barriers and renovations for compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
The improvements will be an initial phase of a project which will focus on the renovation of baseball and soccer fields, a new dog park and a new pavilion and restroom building.
Siko said the township has received Community Development Block Grants in the past that were used for similar work, including a pavilion project in 2018 that renovated an existing restroom to meet ADA standards, improved walkways and a new handicapped parking space.
