Longtime Hempfield supervisor R. Douglas Weimer has announced his candidacy for an open district judge seat in the township.

Weimer, 50, was first elected township supervisor in 2001. He has worked as a public educator for three decades and is an active member of many community organizations and nonprofit agencies. He pointed to his lengthy past as decision maker for the township and experience in working with magistrates to enforce local rules as among his qualifications for the court seat.

Weimer won re-election to his fourth term as Hempfield supervisor in 2019.

“My dedication to area residents and passion for our local community’s well-being motivate me to step into this role as district justice,” he said. “As your neighbor, I pledge to be fair, honest and dedicated to the service of everyone in this community.”

Weimer said, if elected, he plans to be a full-time magistrate. He lives in the township with his wife and three children. He is a registered Republican who plans to cross file in the primary election.

District judges in local court offices handle criminal and landlord-tenant complaints, traffic and non-traffic citations and civil matters. Former District Judge Anthony Bompiani, 41, retired from the post on Dec. 31 after serving five years of a six-year term.

The court office, which oversees court cases from Youngwood, South Greensburg, Southwest Greensburg and parts of Hempfield, is being staffed by Senior District Judge James Falcon who previously held the post. Legislators could appoint someone to finish out Bompiani’s final year, but it was unclear if that would happen given the election slated for 2021.
