Cedar Creek and Twin Lakes parks will play host to witches, zombies, monsters and more Halloween scares in late October for Westmoreland County’s annual Hobgoblin Hikes.

The free hikes, hosted by the county Parks and Recreation Department, have been held since 1977.

The first hike will take place Oct. 21 at Cedar Creek Park in Rostraver Township, and the second is scheduled for Oct. 28 at Twin Lakes Park in Unity Township. Hikes will run continuously from 7 to 9 p.m. both nights.

More than 4,000 people came out for the hikes in 2021, said Lauren Titterington, parks and recreation communications coordinator.

“The Hobgoblin Hikes are the only free events of their kind in our area,” Titterington said. “Our goal is to provide low-cost and family-friendly events for everyone in our community.”

Each hike takes participants on a half-mile outdoor walk through the park. Volunteers will dress up to fit into various ghostly scenes scattered across the park, such as a graveyard, morgue, funeral parlor and zombie apocalypse. No two hikes are decorated the same, Titterington said.

Individuals 15 years of age and older are welcome to volunteer at the hikes. Younger children are welcome to volunteer if accompanied by an adult. Some costume materials will be provided, but volunteers can bring items to complete their look.

To volunteer, call 724-830-3968 or email cchrisma@co.westmoreland.pa.us.

The hikes rotate between four different parks. Next year, they will be held at Northmoreland Park in Allegheny Township and Mammoth Park in Mt. Pleasant Township.

The hikes will take place rain or shine. Participants should dress for the weather and wear sturdy shoes, Titterington said. To avoid lines, participants are encouraged to come to the park later in the evening.
