The Humane Society of Westmoreland County will soon be able to house more dogs at its Hempfield site near Lynch Field.
Once plans are approved by the township, a new dog shelter will be built that features nine kennels, a kitchen, adoption rooms, bathrooms and a utility room, a rendering of the building shows.
With the shelter at capacity with 30 dogs, Executive Director Kathy Burkley is looking to add more space.
“When we run out of space, we can’t take more dogs in,” Burkley said, adding that the proposed kennels are larger than those seen at other shelters.
So far, $375,000 has been raised for the project, but a final price has not yet been set, she said.
The kennel will be located next to the current dog shelter. The property also houses a dog park, a spot for feral cats and a cat shelter, along with two surgery rooms. The shelter offers a clinic, surgical appointments and low-cost spay and neuter options, Burkley said.
“That brings a lot of traffic here,” she said.
A date for construction is yet to be determined.
