Irwin Borough has a new council member who took office this week to serve the remainder of a term that expires at the end of the year.
Nick Powanda, 37, was sworn into office Wednesday by Mayor Jeff Clem.
Powanda replaces Mike Yunn, who resigned last month because he had moved to North Huntingdon. Yunn’s resignation was formally accepted by council on Wednesday.
Powanda was the only person who had applied to fill the remainder of Yunn’s term, said Shari Martino, borough manager.
Powanda is likely to serve a full four-year term on council because he is one of only three candidates on the ballot in the November election for three seats on council. Powanda and Councilman Rick Burdelski won the Republican nomination, while Councilman Shawn Stitely won the Democrat nomination.
