Irwin residents could have a chance to watch community officials conduct business from the comfort of their homes if the borough moves forward with a property to livestream its council meetings.

Borough manager Shari Martino was directed this week to do more research with CCA Solutions Inc. of Greensburg to livestream the council meetings. Council unanimously agreed on the proposal.

Councilman Tyler Baum, who proposed the idea a few months ago and reintroduced it at the August meeting, estimated the startup costs might be about $400 and would only require about 15 minutes preparation time before the meeting to set up the recording system.

“I want to break down any barriers” between the community and the local government, Baum said after the meeting.

The borough would need a laptop, camera and microphone to record the activities and speakers at the meetings, said Nelson Mayer, owner of CCA solutions. The recordings could be placed on the borough website, where people could watch them, Mayer said.

Internet service is spotty at the public works building on First Street, where council has its two meetings a month.

“That could be an issue,” Mayer said.
