Matt Pascal competes in the Upstream Nationals kayak race in Ohiopyle on Saturday, Aug 24, 2024. The annual event involves competitors paddling upstream through the lower Youghiogheny River’s longest Class III rapid.

Kayakers took to the Lower Youghiogheny River on Saturday evening to race downstream — and back upstream.

The Upstream Nationals took place on a half-mile section of the river at Ohiopyle State Park in Fayette County. The race started just below the falls at Ohiopyle and continued part of the way around Ferncliff Peninsula before kayakers headed back to the start line.

They paddled twice through Entrance Rapid — a Class III rapid.

Spectators got a good view of the race at the rapid by walking a trail along Meadow Run.

The Lower Yough attracts thousands of rafters and kayakers every year thanks to the reservoir system upstream that allows water to flow reliably through warm months.
