Children in grades K-4 will have the opportunity to embrace their musical sides this summer.

From Aug. 8-12, the Latrobe Art Center will host “Lead with Music,” a WQED-designed program dedicated to teaching children about music.

Michael Tusay, executive director of the center, said children will learn about musical styles, have dance parties, create music-themed crafts and watch musical performances by artists from the Pittsburgh region during the weeklong program.

WQED Education developed this program to engage children with music, specifically classical music, according to Tusay. This will be the program’s debut.

Though the Latrobe Art center typically focuses on visual arts, Tusay hopes events like this will broaden its musical horizons.

“Our focus is in the arts, but we’re trying to expand past the visual arts to include things like music,” he said. “Music, like the arts, helps children build self-expression skills and improve skills when it comes to math, science and literacy.”

The program comes at no cost to participants thanks to a grant from Westmoreland County Parks and Recreation. However, participants must pay a $10 deposit that will be refunded at the end of the program based on the children’s attendance.

Spots are capped at 50 guests. The program will run daily from 10 a.m.-noon.

Those interested can register online. Tusay asked that participants register by the week of Aug. 1.
