The Ligonier Township planning commission on Thursday will consider an appeal by the Ligonier Country Market that could affect the seasonal venue’s opening date this year.

The market is looking to modify a provision of a 2008 township conditional use permit that indicates it can’t open before Memorial Day, which this year is May 26. The market is held 8 a.m. to noon Saturdays at the Loyalhanna Watershed Association field and has planned on opening May 17 for its 50th season — a date it has announced on its website.

Specifically, the market wants to change the wording of the permit to allow its operations to begin 20 weeks before the last weekend in September.

Any decision the planning board makes at its 6 p.m. meeting would be in the form of a recommendation to the township supervisors.

The supervisors voted on March 25 to uphold the permit’s Memorial Day clause. Given the limited time before May 17, the supervisors have scheduled a special meeting at 7 p.m. on Tuesday to consider the market’s appeal.
