Manor mayor seeks to ‘unite the community’ in 1st Labor Day celebration in over 20 years
For the first time in 21 years, Manor will host its Labor Day carnival.
The event used to be hosted by the borough’s fire department, said Mayor Ed Malinoski, but it ceased in 2002.
For the past year, Malinoski has spearheaded efforts to revive the event, which he has dubbed “Manor Community Day.”
“I’ve lived in the borough for 12 years now, and I’ve never been to a community event,” Malinoski said. “You always see things happening in Jeannette. You see things happening in Irwin. You go to Latrobe and Ligonier, and you see things going on. But nothing here.
“I just felt like this community deserved something,” he said. “We needed some type of event that would unite the community. We’re trying to bring it back.”
The event will take place from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday across three venues in the borough:
• Manor Community Room, Public Library and parking lot, 44 Main St.
• Manor Legion, 58 Race St.
• The baseball fields, across from 511 Brush Creek Road near the intersection of the road and Main Street
The day will kick off with a pet parade, which will begin on South Railroad Street and end at the community room parking lot on Main Street.
The event will feature a variety of entertainment, food, craft vendors and children’s activities, as well as a basket raffle and 50-50 drawing.
Entertainers include Jeannette sibling acoustic duo Pandemonia, Steel City Angels Dance Co., Westmoreland Performing Arts Vibrations and Pittsburgh-based rock band Twisted Fate.
There will also be demonstrations by True Martial Arts and international arm wrestling champion Randy Nelson.
Malinoski hopes to see 5,000 people attend the event.
“The main purpose is to bring the community together,” Malinoski said. “That’s why we call it a ‘community day.’”
