After more than two years of working to raise money for a new playground at West Hempfield Elementary School, the project is finally coming together.

The Hempfield Area School Board this week accepted a $41,559 donation from the West Hempfield Elementary PTO, money that will be used for new playground equipment. Installation of the equipment is slated for early spring, said PTO member Kimberly Pavsek.

“Collectively, we were elated that the playground was approved and we are able to move forward with ordering the new playground equipment,” Pavsek said. “It truly has been a journey to get to this point, but God is always faithful. We can’t wait to see the students at West Hempfield Elementary playing, laughing and making memories in the new space.”

The equipment will be purchased from Ohio-based Snider Recreation and will feature 13 activities including two music panels, three slides, climbing pieces and more.

The current playground has not been renovated for about 18 years, West Hempfield Elementary Principal Chris Brasco said earlier this year. Pavsek said the structure is located near a busy road and parking lot, and has started to deteriorate. The new structure will be moved to the back of the school for a safer environment.

Members of the PTO board have been working to raise funds for the project. According to Pavsek, members of the West Hempfield community, including families, teachers, staff and businesses have been integral in the fundraising process. Pavsek said the board also received two grants.

Still, things like the coronavirus pandemic caused the board to be unable to raise as much money as planned due to canceled fundraisers. The board plans to host a basket raffle next year to help make up for the deficit. Funds raised could be used to add two additional pieces to the playground.

“Everyone who has had a hand in this initiative is so excited to see this dream become a reality for the students at WHE,” Pavsek said via email. “I know they have been anxiously awaiting this new playground as much as we have.”
