At least one person was reported injured in a crash Tuesday between a tri-axle dump truck and another vehicle on Route 30 in Unity.

Here are some of the latest news items from this morning, Tuesday, Oct. 17:

2-vehicle crash on Route 30 in Unity

One man was flown by a medical helicopter to a Pittsburgh hospital early Tuesday morning when his sport utility vehicle collided with a coal-laden tri-axle dump truck along Route 30 in Unity, emergency responders said.

The driver of the SUV had to be extricated from his vehicle, which was severely damaged by the collision with the tri-axle truck in the eastbound lanes, just east of the Marguerite Road intersection, said Scott Graham, Marguerite fire chief. The driver, whose identity was not available, was flown from nearby Arnold Palmer Regional Airport in Unity, Graham said.

The SUV was extensively damaged from the collision with the passenger side of the tri-axle truck. The SUV came to rest up a hillside, with the tri-axle dump truck partially on the road.

The driver of the coal truck declined any medical treatment, Graham said.

Before the coal truck could be moved from the road, the SUV had to be secured by cables to prevent it sliding down the hillside.

The Marguerite, Lloydsville, Pleasant Unity and Dry Ridge fire departments responded to the scene of the accident, which was reported at 6:50 a.m.

State police at Greensburg investigated the crash. Additional details were not available.

Columbia Gas begins restoring service in Beaver County

Columbia Gas of Pennsylvania said Monday night its technicians began restoring gas service in phases to about 4,000 customers in the Baden, Conway, Economy Borough and Freedom areas of Beaver County, a process that will take several days.

The natural gas company said that it is restoring service by grouping customers into one of six phases, based on the scope and complexity of the service restorations in their areas. While some customers may see service restored sooner than others, Columbia Gas said that plan ensures the restoration is completed in the fastest and safest manner.

Columbia Gas crews are going door-to-door to perform safety checks and relight natural gas appliances. Homes where service has not been restored yet are asked to keep their porch lights on.

For those who would need to use a warming center while their gas has not been restored, a warming center has been set up at the Conway Borough Municipal Building, at 801 First Ave. Refreshments and cots and blankets are available for those needing overnight accommodations.
