Latrobe residents can access community-related information with the swipe of a smartphone.

The city will use Pittsburgh-based app Savvy Citizen to update locals with events, meeting dates, emergency notifications, outages, trash pick-up delays and weather watches and warnings.

Latrobe Police Community Service Officer Beth Straka encourages all Latrobe residents to sign up.

“We have different times we need to get information to citizens right now if there’s a critical incident,” Straka said during a council meeting Monday.

Other Westmoreland communities that use the Savvy Citizen app include Ligonier borough, Ligonier Township, South Greensburg, Youngstown, Youngwood and Westmoreland County.

Through the app, Latrobe users can access information about these communities and beyond.

The app can be downloaded for free. Additionally, residents sign up for text messages or email notifications by visiting Savvy Citizen’s website.

“This is going to be so much quicker, nicer, faster and more detailed (than social media alerts),” Straka said.
