N.J. residents accused over $10K in fake checks supposedly issued by Greensburg Salem

Two New Jersey residents are accused of cashing bogus checks worth more than $10,000 made out to a cyber school that falsely stated they were sent on behalf of the Greensburg Salem School District, according to court documents.

Bryce C. Sanders, 24, of Franklinville and Alyssa Wright, 27, of Cape May were charged Thursday with forgery, theft and receiving stolen property, according to court documents.

Greensburg Salem’s business manager contacted city police Aug. 13 for a series of fraudulent checks cashed to unauthorized people at various banks in Delaware, police said. The checks, sent Aug. 1, were written out to a cyber school across the state in Montgomery County.

There was an attempt to cash one check, worth nearly $3,900, at Stepping Stones Federal Credit Union in Wilmington, Del., police said. The credit union held the check and called the school district to determine whether it was legitimate.

A copy of the check was sent to the school district, showing Sanders’ name and home address, police said.

Sanders told police the check was sent to him in the mail directly from the school district and that he attempted to cash it at the credit union, but he could not explain the reason for the payment.

A second check, worth more than $6,000, was deposited into Wright’s PNC Bank account Aug. 7, according to records the bank gave police Monday.

Wright told police she had never heard of the school district and never received a check from them. She confirmed she has an account with PNC Bank.

The school district’s business manager forwarded to police an email indicating the check was accepted by PNC and was believed to be fraudulent. A photo of the check showed it is the same check from the school district to the cyber school.

A preliminary hearing for Wright and Sanders has not yet been scheduled, and bail information has not been posted.
