North Huntingdon’s parks will be spruced up this spring with more than $100,000 of improvements — new trash cans, water fountains and playground equipment.

Township commissioners recently awarded a $52,904 contract to Tree Top Products of Batavia, Ill., for 66 new sturdy trash cans, 40 of which will be placed at Oak Hollow Park and 26 at Indian Lake Park, said Lydia Kinkaid, coordinator of the township’s parks and recreation program.

Oak Hollow Park, North Huntingdon’s largest park, will get 24 32-gallon trash cans and 16 55-gallon trash cans. At Indian Lake, the township will place 16 32-gallon trash containers and 10 55-gallon containers, Kinkaid said. The parks coordinator said she anticipates the trash cans will be delivered in early April.

The township also awarded a $17,515 contract to Global Industrial Co. of Port Washington, N.Y., for seven drinking fountains. Five will be installed at Oak Hollow Park and two at Indian Lake, Kinkaid said. Those fountains have been delivered to the township but not yet installed, Kinkaid said.

The commissioners also awarded a $36,705 contract to Outdoor Escapes Co. of Moon for playground equipment. Kinkaid said most of the equipment will be swings and swing sets and will replace the older equipment.

North Huntingdon also received a $35,500 grant from the state’s Commonwealth Financing Authority to buy security cameras for Oak Hollow and Indian Lake parks. The money came from the Local Share Account revenue generated by the state-licensed casinos, said state Rep. Eric Davanzo, R-South Huntingdon.
