One person was flown from the scene of a two-vehicle collision Monday between a garbage truck and a pickup along Route 981 in Derry Township, according to a Westmoreland County 911 dispatcher.

Robert S. Baden, 52, of New Alexandria, had to be extricated from his Chevrolet Silverado pickup by firefighters before being flown by medical helicopter to UPMC Presbyterian hospital in Pittsburgh, authorities said. Police said he was seriously injured.

The crash occurred about 8:13 a.m. at the highway’s intersection at Wonderwall Drive, the dispatcher reported. The highway section is just south of New Alexandria.

State police at Kiski said Baden was southbound on the 1900 block of Route 981, crossed the double-yellow line, and struck a northbound garbage truck driven by Kenneth Jones of Forestville.

Jones was not injured.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation.

Firefighters from Bradenville, Crabtree and New Alexandria responded. Paramedics from Mutual Aid Ambulance were also on the scene.

State police were investigating. No further information was available.
