Guests at the Westmoreland Food Bank 40th Anniversary Gala expected some good hockey talk from former Pittsburgh Penguin Phil Bourque.
Instead they got football commentary complete with live replay from Pittsburgh Steelers color analyst and former offensive lineman Craig Wolfley.
“You were expecting the Old Two-Niner, you got the fat Seven-Three-er,” Wolfley said at the Saturday evening event, in a reference to Bourque’s nickname. Bourque wore No. 29 as a Penguins player. Wolfley wore No. 73 with the Steelers.
It was a game-time substitution for the special guest.
“A little thing like covid takes him down — but he’s a hockey player,” said Wolfley, shrugging his shoulders at the pre-gala VIP reception.
Following remarks on the importance of “joining together to alleviate some of the hurt going on out there,” Wolfley answered Steelers-related questions during the pre-gala VIP reception.
The most exciting football player he ever saw? Detroit Lions running back Barry Sanders.
The fiercest competition he ever faced? Green Bay Packers defensive end Reggie White.
The 411 on recently drafted quarterback Kenny Pickett? He’s humble, has a great attitude, knows how to compete, anticipates plays and is accurate and mobile.
“The short answer — I like him,” Wolfley said.
About 150 guests partook of dinner and dancing and tried their luck at a silent auction, raffles and 50/50.
On a more serious note, food bank CEO Jennifer Miller said gala proceeds would support child hunger programs, including weekend backpack meals, summer food service and food pantry distribution. The programs serve about 9,000 children annually.
“People are in need, now more than ever,” Wolfley said. “We need to step up and pour life into others.”
