Seton Hill University was on break when the nation observed Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Jan. 20, but officials at the Greensburg school will hold their own observances in memory of the slain civil rights leader in February.
The university will host a well-known sociologist who specializes in community engagement and sponsor a community-wide day of service. Officials said Seton Hill wants students to understand how they can embody King’s legacy in their lives.
On Feb. 5, the university will host Don C. Sawyer III, vice president for Equity and Inclusion and Chief Diversity Officer at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Conn. Sawyer also is a tenured associate professor in the department of sociology, criminal justice and anthropology as well as assistant clinical professor in Quinnipiac’s School of Medicine. He will share his personal reflections “Projects to Ph.D.: Living King’s Dream as a Community-Engaged Sociologist.”
Sawyer’s speech will be limited to the university community. On Saturday, Feb. 8, Seton Hill will sponsor a community-wide day of service in honor of King.
