Students at Franklin Regional Senior High were dismissed from classes early Friday afternoon after a sewage backup prompted closure of the school’s bathrooms.
Students were dismissed beginning at noon and teachers also were permitted to leave since bathroom facilities weren’t available, according to district Superintendent Gennaro R. Piraino Jr.
Piraino said the backup was detected at about 11 a.m. in the building’s basement maintenance area by a worker there and did not directly affect the bathrooms or the students.
He wasn’t sure Friday afternoon what caused the sewage problem.
“This is an older campus,” he said. “It could be a variety of things.
“Our staff was unable to get it unblocked, so a company is coming in.”
Piraino said the district is working to get the problem resolved so classed can resume normally on Tuesday. Students will be off Monday in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
