Sharky’s Cafe in Unity is seeking donations for its Christmas meal program— which helps to feed those in need during the holiday season.

Donations are being accepted until Dec. 21, the date of the meal drive.

Organizer of the drive Sharky’s co-owner Jamie Huemme said the drive will provide 600 meals just as it has the last three years.

Huemme said there are about 50 volunteers who will help to assemble the meals for distribution. The number of volunteers she’s seen participate has at least quadrupled each year, according to Huemme.

Sharky’s kitchen staff will cook all of the food during the morning of Dec. 21 so those receiving the meals can choose to eat them that day or save them until Christmas Eve or Christmas Day.

“They carve out a lot of time to put those meals together and work really hard to make sure they’re done correctly,” Huemme said of the kitchen staff.

Out of the 600 meals, 200 will go toward Meals on Wheels, she said. The others are allocated to various charities in advance.

Any additional meals will go to the Salvation Army to be delivered on Christmas Eve.

Each meal is worth $16.99 and includes ham, potato, vegetable, salad, bread and butter. Those donating can choose to purchase a certain number of meals or give a general monetary donation to help. The goal is to fund 450 meals, Huemme said, as Sharky’s will donate the remaining 150.

To make a donation, stop at Sharky’s, 3960 Route 30, or call 724-532-1620.
