The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra performed Wednesday evening at the Saint Vincent Archabbey Basilica in Unity.

The show, “Music for the Spirit,” paid tribute to Douglas R. Nowicki, OSB, the 11th and second longest-serving archabbot in Saint Vincent’s 178-year history. He oversaw the expansion and renovation of Saint Vincent’s Robert S. Carey Center, as well as the construction of Chuck Noll Field, Fred M. Rogers Center and the Sis and Herman Dupré Science Pavilion.

Nowicki served from 1991 through May 2020, when he retired at 75. He died four years later following a brief illness.

The symphony performed “Larghetto for Orchestra” in honor of Nowicki. Other selections included “Elysium” by Samy Moussa, “Litanei auf das Fest Aller Seelen” by Franz Schubert and “Notre Dame: Intermezzo” by Franz Schmidt.

The symphony performed Handel’s “Messiah” at the Basilica in December 2023.
