The Sewickley Township Supervisors recognized three residents for their bravery Saturday afternoon.

Kurtis Baker, Bradley Cook and Takoma Gantt each received two awards commending them for their lifesaving actions during a Sewickley Township house fire in March.

The three men assisted Ruth Shotts in escaping her burning home on Yukon-Madison Road. And they stayed with her until emergency services arrived and transported her to a hospital.

The Act of Courage Hero Award from the township was awarded to each man by township Supervisors Mark Petros, Bill Dull and Linda Harvey.

State Sen. Kim Ward also awarded them letters of recognition for their actions from the state Senate. She said the Senate is “proud to honor those individuals who display an exceptional commitment to the welfare of their fellow citizens.”

The letter also named the three men as “modern-day heroes.” They were presented the letters and engraved plaques during an awards ceremony held in the Sewickley Township Municipal Building.

Bill Dull, chief of Hutchinson Fire Department, and Frank Sever, Hutchinson fire captain, were at the scene of the fire and attended the ceremony.

Baker and Gantt were not in attendance, but their friends and family attended to accept the awards on their behalf. Township supervisors treated those attending to lunch after the ceremony.
