Unity is spending about $650,000 from its state road fund to repave portions of seven roads this summer.
Derry Construction is slated to resurface Sharky’s and Beech drives — as well as Atlantis Drive, near Youngstown. The paving schedule also includes portions of Roskovensky and Cemetery roads and, at Wimmerton, the entrance to that housing development along with North Shenandoah Drive.
The township supervisors trimmed more than $337,000 from the contractor’s original bid by forgoing paving this year on some other roads.
“After the bids were in, we looked to see how much money we have to spend,” Supervisor Mike O’Barto said. “Bidding prices have gone up because of oil.”
He pointed out that the township completed road paving projects with a combined value of nearly $7 million over the three previous years.
“That’s a good bit,” he said.
The paving is funded through the township’s share of state liquid fuels money, generated through Pennsylvania’s gasoline tax.
Federal community development block grant funding is covering the costs of additional paving Derry Construction is completing this year in the village of Whitney.
