A man driving through Penn Township on the Pennsylvania Turnpike was taken to Forbes Regional Hospital after striking a tree Tuesday morning.

Penn Township Ambulance, Harrison City Volunteer Fire Department, and turnpike officials were dispatched to the area of mile marker 60 on the toll road around 8:20 a.m., according to a Westmoreland County 911 dispatcher.

The man’s car left the road, plowed through a fence and struck a tree, overturning the vehicle, according to Ed Grant — director of operations for the Penn Township Ambulance service.

The man, who was not identified, was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash and was rescued from the vehicle and taken to the Forbes trauma center in stable condition, Grant said. His injuries are non-life threatening.

The man told state police he accidentally drove off the roadway, according to Cpl. Richard Levan. Though the man was alert and spoke to first responders, EMS crews transported him to Forbes as a precaution.
