This past Saturday, Westmoreland County community members took to the trail at Twin Lakes Park, raising over $80,000 for the Alzheimer’s Association.

The Walk to End Alzheimer’s is the world’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for those affected by Alzheimer’s and research on the disease.

This year, more than 300 residents participated in the Westmoreland County walk at Twin Lakes, east of Greensburg.

“H2B” came out ahead this year as the top fundraising team, with a total of $10,100. The team’s goal was initially $500. Jennifer Pallitto, H2B’s team captain, started the team in honor of loved ones to help raise funds for a cure.

Though fundraising totals were shared at the event, the Alzheimer’s Association fundraising cycle for the Westmoreland County Walk to End Alzheimer’s continues until the end of the calendar year — through Dec. 31.

Donations can be made online.

As a part of the event, there’s a Promise Garden ceremony for the attendees — where various colors of flowers represent people’s connection to Alzheimer’s. During the ceremony, people shared their stories, and anyone who related could hold up their flower in support.

More than 6 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s, and over 280,000 people are living with the disease in Pennsylvania.
