Westmoreland Ballet Company is seeking dancers and other community partners for a film version of the beloved holiday classic, “The Nutcracker.”
“Incorporating area artists, musicians, performers, community members and business owners, the film will highlight Greensburg and surrounding towns,” according to the recently established company.
Filming will begin in September.
“Fans of the traditional ‘Nutcracker’ will get to see their own friends and neighborhoods as Clara leads them through her adventurous tale, showcasing storefronts, businesses and landmarks,” the company says. “As cancellations, closures and uncertainties threaten the performing arts’ contributions to upcoming holiday seasons, WBC hopes to boost both community spirit and local economies.”
Area dancers of all ages and abilities are encouraged to sign up for the project. Area business also are invited to sign up to be added to filming locations. The company’s website and social media accounts will list additional opportunities to participate in and support the filming.
Summer dance workshops begin July 27 at the company’s studio at 41 N. Main St., Greensburg. After classes have finished each day, staging for “The Nutcracker” will begin.
The summer schedule includes:
• Drop-in classes for all levels, July 20-25
• Junior Workshop, July 27-Aug. 7
• Advanced Workshop, July 27-Aug. 14
• Undergrad Dance Major Workshop, July 27-Aug. 14
• Dance Competitor Workshop, August 10-14.
“Community involvement is the true magic behind this ‘Nutcracker’ project,” says Judy Rae Tubbs, artistic director of the new ballet school and collaborative company. “Our goal is to integrate everyone from baristas to barristers into this piece of art. In times of trouble, the arts take a hard, deep hit. At the same time, arts have the power and responsibility to heal, inspire and uplift a troubled public.”
The film will be made available for purchase by streaming, download or DVD.
The new Greensburg-based nonprofit ballet school is working to build a professional performing company and to offer classes for dancers of all ages, along with an early-release high school program and dual enrollment for university credits.
