A Youngwood man will be extradited to Wisconsin after pleading guilty Wednesday to resisting arrest at a Hempfield fitness club.
Martin Alvarez Jr., 35, was sentenced to serve up to six months in jail but was immediately paroled after receiving credit for time served since his December arrest.
Police said Alvarez was wanted on a warrant issued by the Wisconsin Department of Corrections for allegedly absconding from supervision. A Wisconsin department spokesman told TribLive last month that Alvarez was believed to have been living in Illinois prior to his arrival in Pennsylvania.
An out-of-uniform state trooper identified Alvarez inside an Anytime Fitness gym in Hempfield on Dec. 11 and attempted to take him into custody. Alvarez tried to flee and was eventually subdued by police using Tasers, according to court records.
As part of a plea deal finalized with prosecutors, Alvarez pleaded guilty to misdemeanor counts of resisting arrest and vandalism. Two remaining counts — terroristic threats and disorderly conduct — were dismissed.
Defense attorney Charles Porter claimed Alvarez was the victim of a “set up.” He noted the plea deal was designed to enable his client’s extradition to Wisconsin to answer the original allegations.
