One of Kelsey Blahovec’s first cookie batches came out “in the form of edible concrete.” That’s what happens when you add a cup of baking soda instead of a teaspoon.

It didn’t chase her out of the kitchen, though. She doubled down on her baking efforts and now is the owner of Wolf & Whisk Baked Goods, with counter space inside The Trendy Bunny Studio in downtown Greensburg.

Blahovec will show her stuff to the public during a grand opening from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday in the business at 123 McKeon Way.

The event will feature live music, baked goods for sale, samples and complimentary champagne, while supplies last.

Wolf & Whisk will carry everyday staples such as chocolate croissants, sugar cookies, espresso sea salt chocolate chip cookies, cupcakes, cake pops and a small bento box cake. The $8 cake serves one or two people and comes with a candle and fork.

Blahovec will have weekly specials featuring different flavor combinations and coffee from Standing Wave Coffee in Pittsburgh. Logo merchandise and goods from several local artisans also will be available.

Blahovec noted that her custom sugar cookies became so popular via online orders that she is booked for custom orders through the end of the year. She is taking orders now to be filled in 2023.

Baking was not a lifelong passion for the Greensburg resident, 32, a sports management graduate of Seton Hill University.

“I didn’t grow up in the kitchen baking with grandma,” she said.

When her husband, Zac Blahovec, was turning 21, she decided she wanted to get a cake for him in the shape of a Jack Daniels whiskey bottle — except the quoted price was $250 and she had “zero dollars in my account.” So she turned to a YouTube tutorial.

“I thought, ‘How hard can it be?’ It was hard. Now I see why they charge $250,” she said.

The cake was a success, though, and family members and friends started asking her to bake treats for special occasions. Her love of baking grew.

Blahovec, who was working full time in admissions at Seton Hill, started selling custom sugar cookies under the Wolf & Whisk name through social media in August 2020. She also had a space at the 2021 Greensburg Night Market.

Randomly, Trendy Bunny owner Alisha Edwards contacted Blahovec, asking for a recommendation of a student who could be a nanny for her son.

“I was coming home from work and baking until 2 or 3 a.m.,” she said. “I thought maybe I could back off from my full-time job. I asked my husband, ‘What if I nanny part time until Wolf & Whisk takes off?’ ”

Blahovec took the nanny job, leading Edwards to offer her retail space in The Trendy Bunny.

“We were such a good mix. (Edwards) so quickly became like family,” Blahovec said. “She has the space and so many good ideas.”

The Trendy Bunny Studio offers children’s clothing, toys and other merchandise; women’s clothing and accessories; a play space; and special event bookings. It also houses other small businesses.

“It’s so important to have that support team,” Blahovec said. “Team Trendy is constantly wanting you to succeed from the bottom of their hearts.”

Blahovec said her husband and her mother, Kathy Criner of Hempfield, also have provided helping hands and moral support whenever needed.

“It’s just me, myself and I baking. But they do anything I need,” she said. “They just say, ‘Where do you need me?’ They’re my volunteer sous chefs, they pack orders. They’re picking me up off the ground when a recipe didn’t work or calming me down when I’m panicking because it’s 7 o’clock and my 8 o’clock order isn’t ready.”

Aside from adding a sweet touch to downtown Greensburg, Blahovec said she and her husband are invested in seeing that the city is attractive to other young people.

“Sure, we would love to live in cool places like Utah or Stowe, Vt., but number one, they’re too expensive, and our families are here,” she said. “With students graduating from Seton Hill or Saint Vincent, they aren’t going to stay if there’s nothing for them to do.

“We want to be part of that grassroots of young people starting businesses and growing Greensburg.”

Wolf & Whisk Baked Goods will be open during The Trendy Bunny’s operating hours, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Mondays, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesdays-Wednesdays and Fridays, and 10 a.m.-7:30 p.m Thursdays.
