From Atkins Street in Brighton Heights to Woodbine Street in Stanton Heights, Pittsburgh’s Department of Mobility and Infrastructure released the list of streets that will be paved in the first round of $16 million in improvements this year.

About 34 miles of streets will be resurfaced and/or repaired this year, according to the city.

The work will start next week.

The bulk of the work in the first round of paving will be done in the southern and western neighborhoods, including 39 streets in the South Side neighborhoods represented on council by Bruce Kraus, 28 streets in the South Hills neighborhoods represented by Anthony Coghill and 31 streets in the West End neighborhoods represented by Theresa Kail-Smith.

“The more paving the better,” Coghill said.

He chairs the city’s public works committee and said each council member works with the Department of Mobility and Infrastructure to help compile the list.

There are more streets that need paving than the city has money to complete each year, but Coghill said maintaining the streets is one of the city’s primary goals.

Here’s how the paving projects break down by council district:

• District 1 (North Side, represented by Bobby Wilson): 22 streets to be paved.

• District 2 (West End, represented by Kail-Smith): 31 streets.

• District 3 (South Side, represented by Kraus): 39 streets.

• District 4 (South Hills, represented by Coghill): 28 streets.

• District 5 (southern section of the East End, represented by Corey O’Connor): 20 streets.

• District 6 (Downtown/Hill District/parts of the North Side, represented by R. Daniel Lavelle): 15 streets.

• District 7 (Strip District, Bloomfield, Lawrenceville and Highland Park, represented by Deb Gross): 24 streets.

• District 8 (East End neighborhoods including Oakland, Shadyside, parts of Point Breeze and Squirrel Hill, represented by Erika Strassburger): 10 streets.

• District 9 (East Liberty, Homewood, Larimer and North Point Breeze, represented by Ricky Burgess): 26 streets.

Because many people continue to work from home during the pandemic, the city will make extra efforts to notify residents if they need to move their vehicles parked on the street.

Projects will be posted weekly on the DOMI website.
