A Wilkinsburg man was sentenced Thursday to 17½ to 40 years in prison for killing a man in Homewood last year.
Khatrell Haynes-Morgan, 20, pleaded guilty to third-degree murder and aggravated assault in March after reaching a plea deal with the Allegheny County District Attorney’s Office, court records show. As part of the deal, prosecutors dropped firearms and endangerment charges and gave Haynes-Morgan a lesser homicide charge.
The murder charge carried a sentence of 15 to 35 years, while the assault charge carried a consecutive sentence of 2½ to 5 years, the District Attorney’s Office said.
Pittsburgh police said Haynes-Morgan fired 11 shots in the 7700 block of Frankstown Avenue around 1 a.m. June 1, 2022.
Video showed that Glenn Davenport, 34, had been talking with Haynes-Morgan and then was shot in the head while running away from him. Davenport collapsed onto Brushton Avenue near Frankstown Avenue, according to a criminal complaint filed in the case. First responders pronounced Davenport dead at 1:04 a.m.
A woman, who police did not name, also was injured in the shooting. She told police that she heard gunshots and ran to Denise and Earl’s Bar on Frankstown Avenue before realizing she was shot in her right arm. She was taken to UPMC Presbyterian hospital for treatment, police said.
Pittsburgh police worked on the case with Wilkinsburg police Sgt. Brandon Rourke, who knew Haynes-Morgan from a previous incident. Haynes-Morgan previously had pleaded guilty to a robbery, the complaint said.
Two Pittsburgh police detectives also reviewed video footage and helped identify Haynes-Morgan, who they knew “through a previous investigation and multiple encounters,” the complaint said.
The man who represented Haynes-Morgan, attorney Heath Leff of the Allegheny County Public Defender’s Office, did not return messages.
The U.S. Marshals Western Pennsylvania Fugitive Task Force and Pittsburgh Police Fugitive Apprehension Unit worked together to arrest Haynes-Morgan six days after the shooting.
