Highmark CEO’s pay tops $8.64 million

Highmark President and CEO David Holmberg made $8.64 million in compensation in 2021, up 11% from $7.82 million the year before, according to financial papers from the health care giant.
At Highmark Health, the organization’s parent company, Karen Hanlon, the company’s executive vice president and chief operating officer, made $3.95 million, records show. Other C-suite executives included: Tony Farah, chief medical and clinical officer, $2.44 million; Saurabth Tripathi, executive vice president and chief financial officer, $2.42 million; and Larry Kleinman, executive vice president and chief human resources officer, $2.17 million.
At Allegheny Health Network, Highmark Health’s hospital system in Pennsylvania and New York, President Cynthia Hundorfean made $3.31 million, followed by: Sricharan Chalikonda, chief medical operations officer, $2.06 million; Don Whiting, chief medical officer, $1.92 million; Edward Westrick, physician, $1.88 million; and Daniel Altman, physician, $1.58 million.
A total of 17 AHN employees received more than $1 million in compensation in 2021, records showed.
In 2021, Highmark Health reported $22 billion in consolidated revenue, an operating gain of $301 million, and excess revenue over expenses of $440 million, excluding one-time gains.
The Pittsburgh-based nonprofit had on call 150 independent contractors making more than $100,000 a year in 2021, records show. Highmark Health paid Deloitte $8.59 million and Accenture $2.99 million in 2021 for consulting; the cost of working in cloud computing with Google topped $5.13 million in 2021.
Highmark Health reported a total value of its land, buildings and equipment of $286 million, with a depreciation in value of $129 million, according to the filing.
A Highmark Health spokesperson declined to make additional comment.
