Buccos Roofing is giving back to their community in a major way by offering free roofs to qualifying homes in the Pittsburgh region. Over the years, the family-run company based in Bethel Park has installed roofs across the region — from every city neighborhood to practically every surrounding borough, town and suburb. This initiative is a joint project with Owens-Corning, the biggest supplier of tiles for Buccos.

Buccos has previously given one free roofing installation away in 2024. With this new joint venture, they aspire to install two free roofs in 2025. The homes receiving free roofs will be picked at random. Individuals fill out an online form via a link and/or QR code, and then Buccos uses an AI-generated algorithm to choose the winner randomly. They are infusing this giveaway with a kind of sweepstakes energy. Qualifying entrants only have to prove property ownership within the Pittsburgh region.

Richard Kostkas, marketing specialist for Buccos, says the company seeks to have a bigger influence on the community they serve.

“Everybody who works here, we just all love our hometown. We feel our company values align with the spirit behind this new initiative,” he says. “We have been successful locally because people trust us, they see the quality of our work and the efficiency of our workers, and they witness us finding solutions to their problems. Reputation is everything. We’re not going anywhere and because of that, we want to show our community that we are investing in and providing for families who live here.”

Buccos Roofing was founded in 2012 by Ernie Comfort and brothers Mark and Dan Easton, but its history dates to the early 2000s. That’s when Comfort and the Easton brothers attended Peters Township Middle School together, along with Kostkas, and became friends. Kostkas relays the origin story of the company: “Mark was always the go-getter. At one point, he was renting part of his house to roofers. He talked to them and watched them and one day said to the rest of us, ‘Hey, we should be roofers.’ He financed a cheap truck and just went to work.”

The work paid off, as their workload grew from two to three jobs a year to 10 jobs a year to dozens. Today, Buccos Roofing oversees between 1,200 and 1,500 roof installations per year. They believe the key to their growth lies in the goal of total customer satisfaction. A 10-year roof warranty is guaranteed, and over the years, they rarely have to return to a job. They maintain positive Google reviews, stand by their quality of work, and rely on word-of-mouth referrals for most of their business.

Bobby Butler, the human resources director, started with the company in 2014 as the first employee outside of ownership. He credits the grassroots, family-values-driven efforts as keys to Buccos’ success. “We grew up together. We remember talking around campfires about our dreams and goals. We’ve all been best men in each others’ weddings,” Butler says. “We were warned not to work with family and friends, but personally I think that’s the secret sauce.” Butler has stepped in on more than one occasion, serving as a mediator to random disputes, reminding team members that everyone works hard and they balance each other out with their unique talents. He is quick to point out that the company not only provides jobs for 35 employees, but also is responsible for the livelihoods of 35 families.

Buccos employees are proud to be part of an independent company. “Bigger companies have looked to buy us, but we’re not interested,” Kostkas says. “First of all, we want to work. Secondly, it’s important to be independent. When you make all the decisions, you can control the quality. In our opinion, the quality of care gets lost when businesses grow too big. We want to be known as your trusted contractor.”

Their pirate-with-a-beard logo is well-known around town, as it evokes the sports franchise of Pittsburgh’s baseball team. But in no way are they trying to copy the Pittsburgh Pirates. Butler explains: “In the office we would jokingly call each other ‘bucco’ as a nickname. We hired two artist friends to design a logo and then voted on the various versions. We combined the details of each design that we liked, then added stars. Originally the colors were blue and white, but after someone suggested black and gold, we knew that was a no-brainer. We are all big sports fans and just love the city itself, so it stayed.”

Looking ahead, Buccos Roofing wants to help more families invest in their homes by starting more charities. “We support our own families with this business and we want to help other Pittsburgh families,” says Butler. “We’re real in wanting to give others more opportunity, and we want to give back to the same community who has supported us.”

Homeowners can request a free estimate online and look at a photo gallery of finished projects on the Buccos website. A link to enter the sweepstakes will be posted in the upcoming months.
