Pennsylvania adds 931 new coronavirus cases, with large number stemming from Centre County

The Pennsylvania Department of Health reported 931 new positive coronavirus cases on Wednesday, with a large number stemming from Centre County, the home of Penn State’s main campus.

Centre County added 184 new cases on Wednesday, with that one-day total accounting for more than 21 percent of the county’s total of 870 cases. Penn State’s coronavirus dashboard shows there have been 433 positive cases just since Aug. 27.

The 931 cases bring the state’s total to 141,290.

The state’s health department also reported 14 new deaths on Wednesday — their data shows 11 came in September, four in August and one in April, with two removed from July. Those deaths bring the state’s total to 7,805, with 132 in September.

Residents from nursing or personal care facilities account for 5,262 of the state’s deaths. There have also been 21,499 covid-19 cases among residents and 4,630 of employees at those facilities.

Allegheny County had the most new cases in Western Pennsylvania, with 68 to bring its total to 10,915. Here’s how the rest of the region fared, with total cases and change from Tuesday:

  • Armstrong: 366 (+13)
  • Beaver: 1,722 (+8)
  • Butler: 904 (+24)
  • Fayette: 722 (+8)
  • Indiana: 479 (+7)
  • Somerset: 186 (+3)
  • Washington: 1,156 (+6)
  • Westmoreland: 1,914 (+7)

According to the Pennsylvania Department of Health, there are currently 94 covid-19 patients hospitalized in the nine-county area, with 18 on a ventilator. Allegheny County has the most with 65 patients hospitalized and 13 requiring ventilators. Overall in the state, there are 492 coronavirus patients hospitalized and 60 requiring ventilators.
