Vice President Mike Pence is stumping again in Western Pennsylvania, with a political rally planned for Friday afternoon at the Allegheny County Airport.

Pence is set to deliver remarks at a “Make America Great Again Victory” rally to be held at Lynx FBO hangar at the airport in West Mifflin, about seven miles southeast of Pittsburgh, according to campaign officials.

Officials with Lynx declined to comment about the event or anticipated crowd size or capacity.

Also planning to be at the event are U.S. Rep. Mike Kelly, R-Butler, who represents the 16th Congressional District, and congressional candidate Luke Negron. Negron is challenging U.S. Rep. Mike Doyle, D-Forest Hills, to represent the 18th Congressional District, which spans the entire city of Pittsburgh and suburbs such as Penn Hills, Pleasant Hills, Wilkinsburg and McKeesport.

The event is open to the public but requires registering for free tickets via the campaign’s website. Doors open at 2:30 p.m., and the event is scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m.

Temperatures will be taken at the door, and attendees are urged to wear face masks or coverings to prevent the spread of covid-19, according to the campaign.

In response to the rally’s announcement, Pennsylvania Democratic Party spokesman Andres Anzola issued a statement: “Our state’s economy is in freefall and more than half a million Pennsylvanians are still out of work, but Vice President Pence is out playing politics instead of coming up with a solution. Families in Southwestern Pennsylvania are tired of the Trump administration’s broken promises and failed leadership. We deserve better. We deserve Joe Biden.”

Friday’s rally follows a string of similar events hosted by Pence, President Donald Trump and several Trump surrogates nearly every week in recent months as Pennsylvania looks to be among the most important battleground states in the 2020 presidential election.

Pence reiterated the importance of the Trump campaign winning Pennsylvania during a rally Saturday in Reading, and again during a 50-minute speech at Capital City Airport in New Cumberland.

Although the Trump-Pence ticket lost in Allegheny County and Philadelphia in 2016, large margins in the state’s rural and suburban counties pushed them to a narrow victory in the state — an edge the campaign hopes to expand this year.

Last month, Pence visited Beaver and Westmoreland counties. On Sept. 9, he spoke at a rally themed “Jobs! Jobs! Jobs!” at a Penn Energy natural gas well pad site in New Sewickley after headlining a pro-life event at Cornerstone Ministries church in Murrysville.

The vice president also visited Westmoreland County on July 30, when he appeared before about 400 supporters at a Cops for Trump rally in a Greensburg parking lot.

Election Day is 12 days away. Many Pennsylvania voters already have cast mail-in ballots, with nearly 1.8 million mail-in ballots, or 41% of those requested, returned as of this week.

Nearly half of all voters may participate through mail-in balloting for the first general election under the state’s new election law.
