The second-highest ranking for the recently formed U.S. Space Force has tested positive for covid-19, the U.S. Air Force said late Wednesday in a statement.

Air Force spokeswoman Ann Stefanek said the vice chief of space operations, Gen. David Thompson, took the test after learning that a family member with whom he had been in contact had also tested positive.

Thompson was on leave last week but returned to the Pentagon for work on Monday, from which he remotely addressed a virtual symposium hosted by the National Defense Industrial Association and Texas A&M University.

Stefanek said the four-star general has not shown any symptoms for covid-19.

Contact tracing to determine if other military leaders may have been exposed to Thompson was underway Wednesday night, Stefanek added.
