In response to the cynical views expressed in the letter “The real Christmas story” (Dec. 3, TribLive): Even if some of the opinions could be proven fact, his conclusion discarding belief does not necessarily follow.

An unusual conjunction of planets did shine with amazing brightness in the East, a phenomenon anticipated and pondered by wise men.

How could the “they,” referenced in the letter, have so brilliantly conspired through centuries to coordinate and popularized these “stupid” myths? The recorded life, words and works of Jesus contradict a portrayal of him as an insular xenophobic. “Some” scholars say this and some say that. Amid uncertainty, faith often dictates choice.

I choose to believe the ideals that underpin the biblical accounts, despite the stories’ possible legendary elements. They reflect a God who chose to dwell with a small, unknown people offering them freedom to love and worship through following his laws. A faithful light who shone hope, guiding them for ages through his prophets; a God who constantly exhorted them to concern for the outcast, the refugee, the poor. A God who showed his compassion by becoming one of us in the most scandalous, mundane of circumstances to fulfill his promises of forgiveness and eternal life.

Unlike a “pagan” demi god born to an unwilling virgin, Christ has survived 2,000-plus years of history and drawn billions of followers. Contrary to these idols, he has promoted, by example, if not always successfully, love, sacrifice, mercy and peace.
