Letter to the editor: Destroying Social Security
Initially, I was perplexed about why Elon Musk and President Trump seemed to be targeting Social Security before other entitlements. Typically, Republicans advocate for cutting spending to reduce taxes. However, Social Security pays for itself with FICA, and because there is a cap, at most, each billionaire pays a little more than $10,000 a year. Hardly worth the effort.
Then I realized that if they destroy Social Security and throw millions out of retirement, it will vastly increase the labor pool, increase the number of people looking for jobs and thus reduce wages.
This goal may seem to contradict their tough-on-immigration policy, which they state is intended to reduce the labor pool and increase wages. However, if their true goal is the tech-bro billionaires’ stated desire to transform America from a democracy into a techno-feudal state, then there is no contradiction.
In this narrative, each city-state and its inhabitants are owned by a corporation. There is no such thing as wages. There is no migration, or even movement, between city-states for people other than the corporate executives. The first step would be to close down the international borders and deny constitutional rights to one small group of people, which they are doing now with undocumented workers. The next step would be to deny constitutional rights and travel to a larger group of people, say the LGBTQ community.
