Letter to the editor: Freezing aid programs

Tribune-Review
| Sunday, February 23, 2025 7:00 a.m.

Freezing our aid programs is placing millions of lives in danger. Smart, strategic assistance is a valuable policy tool and helps advance U.S. interests around the world. Cutting aid programs doesn’t save money — it fuels instability and creates crises that are even more expensive to fix.

Our aid programs have been saving millions of lives. Since the pause was implemented, soup kitchens serving hundreds of thousands of people have closed. People have been unable to access the medicine that keeps them alive. A U.S.-funded program that surveils terrorist organizations was forced to shut down. For every day the U.S. stopped funding for antiretroviral drugs, 40 newborn babies contracted HIV.

It is imperative that these programs can continue their vital, lifesaving work. Rep. Chris Deluzio, I hope I can count on your support to maintain these important programs and the legacy of U.S. leadership that they’ve helped create.
