If one wishes to understand why reasonable people hold Congress in such low regard, look to the foolish and absurd passage in the U.S. House of Representatives of a bill to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America, a litmus test as to the extent to which the Republicans in the body are Donald Trump stooges and pitiful sycophants. The bill passed on a virtual party line basis, 211-206.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor-Greene of Georgia is the sponsor of the bill: one of the leaders of the unhinged, stating that this is one of the most important things this Congress can act upon. I did not notice that renaming the Gulf was high on the list of Trump voters’ priorities leading up to last year’s election, but whatever their leader wants, the Republicans in Congress will strive to deliver.

I suppose we should be thankful that the president did not demand that it be renamed the Gulf of Trump. I should not give him any ideas.

When one considers the time and effort that was devoted to something so idiotic and childish, it is easy to see that our country is in trouble.
