Letter to the editor: Looking forward to fair coverage

A few recent items in this newspaper gave me some hope that political events would be covered more fairly in the coming year. The letter “Fact-checking censorship” (Jan. 15, TribLive) was an excellent rebuttal to Lori Falce’s column “Meta is wrong about abandoning fact-checking”, (Jan. 10, TribLive) which stated that she was more trustful of the conventional “fact-checkers” than the entire community weighing in, such as Meta wants to use in the future. It is problematic that Sharyl Attkisson, who I consider an excellent and unbiased investigative journalist, found out in her research that eight of 10 fact-checkers conventionally used by much of our media are supported in some way by George Soros.

The articles “Open access: Push for election transparency plays out in Pa. courts” (Dec. 22, TribLive) by the Trib’s Paula Reed Ward and “Facing Trump threats, Al Schmidt defended Pa.’s 2020 election as free, fair and secure and believes same about 2024” (Dec. 21, TribLive) by Spotlight PA were much more informative and fairer than anything the AP puts out and pointed out that there are still many questions about election integrity in Pennsylvania — from the left and the right. My hope is that our state government and the media look into these allegations so all of the electorate can have confidence in our election results rather than castigating one side or the other when questions arise.

Although Donald Trump was elected for his second term, we can’t rest on our laurels and assume that our elections are beyond reproach.
