Letter to the editor: Pat Buchanan’s racism appalling

I was appalled at the blatant white supremacism and hateful rhetoric being spewed in Pat Buchanan’s column “Is diversity making U.S. stronger?” (Aug. 18, TribLIVE).
Correlation doesn’t equal causation — Buchanan implies a fallacious connection between the drop in white births over the past decade and the presence of other races/ethnicities in the U.S. Couldn’t it be that low pay, lack of job security and higher education delaying marriage and childbirth in recent generations have something to do with it?
All that aside, I find his concern that “the white American population declined” to be frankly sickening. There is no inherent merit or superiority in “whiteness.” Fluctuating percentages of skin color in the nation is no cause for alarm. What’s next — fearmongering over a rise in interracial marriage, Roma or Jews? What does that sound like? He even goes so far as to suggest that China’s current system of ethnic cleansing and extreme communist conformity is the preferable model to diversity and, oh, equal human rights.
Finally, I can state from experience that the immigration process, while frustrating, is still vastly better in Spain than in the United States. I should know — I’m living it. At least Spain has a system in place that permits workers of several years to gain residency … and doesn’t put children in cages.
