Letter to the editor: Pet care assistance available

Tribune-Review

As a volunteer with Humane Action Pennsylvania (HAP) and a proud guardian of two cats, I have seen firsthand the importance of responsible pet guardianship. This means more than just providing food and shelter, it’s ensuring proper medical care, socialization and love. It includes spaying or neutering, routine vet visits and protecting animals from extreme weather. For example, in Pennsylvania, it is illegal to leave animals tethered outside for more than 30 minutes when temperatures exceed 90 degrees.

However, being a responsible guardian can be difficult for those facing financial or housing instability. Rather than judging, we must support those who want to care for their pets but struggle due to circumstances beyond their control.

HAP offers resources for low-income residents, including affordable veterinary care guides, pet food assistance and support for families entering treatment facilities or facing domestic violence. These services help keep pets with their families, benefiting both people and animals.

Building a humane community means ensuring everyone has the tools to care for their animal companions. If you or someone you know is struggling, please reach out to HAP or visit our website for support.
