Letter to the editor: Pets don’t make for good holiday gifts

As the holidays approach, many people are looking for meaningful gifts, and some believe a new pet makes the perfect surprise. But giving animals as gifts, especially without the recipient’s knowledge, can endanger both the person and the pet. A surprised new guardian has no chance to prepare for the commitments of pet ownership, and they may be unable to provide proper care.

There is also no guarantee that the animal and human will be a good match. Allergies, personality conflicts or busy schedules can create an unsuitable home, leading to neglect or abandonment. Furthermore, the holiday season is an inherently hectic time. Disruptions like visitors and package deliveries make it difficult for any animal to adjust, especially those with past trauma.

While a pet may seem like a charming surprise, the responsibilities of pet ownership last long after the holidays. More compassionate options include giving pet-related items to those planning to adopt, or volunteering together at a local shelter.

This season, I urge readers to remember that pets are not props. They are living beings who need stability, care and love. Let’s give thoughtfully and keep animals’ well-being at the center of our choices.
