Letter to the editor: School choice promotes excellence

As superintendent of River Valley School District, I believe in educational excellence tailored to meet the diverse needs of students and families. That’s why I support expanding school choice and increasing parental involvement in education.

Our system must move beyond one-size-fits-all solutions. Parents should be free to choose the best path for their children, whether through traditional public schools, charters, private institutions or homeschooling. Policies promoting school choice empower parents to select educational providers that align with their child’s needs.

Transparency in curriculum and educational standards is equally vital. Parents deserve a voice in what their children are learning. As educators, we must ensure that all materials reflect accuracy, cultural relevance and historical integrity — free from undue biases. Engaged parents are key to creating an inclusive and accountable educational environment.

Our River Valley STEAM Academy exemplifies what’s possible when education connects to real-world applications. Since its inception, the academy has set a benchmark for innovation and academic excellence, surpassing traditional models that often struggle to meet evolving educational demands.

Involving parents in education leads to higher engagement, improved outcomes and personalized learning experiences. Advocating for school choice and parental involvement isn’t just a policy shift; it fosters a culture that values and uplifts every family’s voice.

I urge state and federal policymakers to prioritize educational freedom. Together, we can transform the landscape of American education. Our children deserve no less.
