Letter to the editor: Speak up about air pollution
Regarding the article “Damage reported at U.S. Steel facility in Braddock, followed by an increase in air pollution” (Feb. 25, TribLive): Merely two days after a hole opened up in a heavy industrial factory, we saw a violation of normal pollutant levels in areas surrounding the factory. Immediately, officials came forward to say that we don’t know what caused the spike, despite the apparent correlation.
The officials assured the public that a study would be underway, but when we know that cancer is more likely for those in the Mon Valley, we know that our air has a problem. And when you feel the thick air coating your lungs on a hot summer day, you know our air has a problem.
Right now, Allegheny County Council is considering an increased fee on pollution. This money goes toward our health department and protects our community. You can find your County Council member here. Before the proposal comes to a vote, let your council member know where you stand.
