Letter to the editor: Speeding in Greensburg —preventing a tragedy
Share this post:
We have all read the heartbreaking story of the sweet 11-year-old who was struck and killed by a car in Natrona and how they are now looking into the speeding problem there (“11-year-old killed in Natrona crash ‘brought people together,’ ” Aug. 22, TribLive). As a previous 30-year resident of Northmont Street and current grandparent to three children of the same address, I am begging Greensburg to be proactive on the same situation here.
Northmont Street has become a runway for speeding vehicles both up and down the hill. The residential road is not a thoroughfare between two main roads. It is, however, home to young families and is dotted with school bus stops. Careless drivers are reaching astounding speeds, and multiple pets have been killed on the stretch.
There have been many communications with the city over decades and finally an LED speed sensor sign was recently put in place … while the road was milled and everyone drove slower! (In my own neighborhood, the same sign was posted just beyond a stop sign.) The sign is presently sitting unused on a side street.
There are some simple, inexpensive solutions such as new, clean signage and painted “SLOW DOWN” reminders in each direction. Resume painting the walking lane line that creates a safety zone. Better yet, add a stop sign at the highly used Glenview Avenue intersection much like the one added to Kenneth Street at Wayne Avenue solely for speed control.
I don’t want to read the same type of article covering an incident occurring in our hometown. Please help us prevent a tragedy.
