I was pleased to read your article “Data center delay” (Oct. 28). Luckily, the residents of Springdale are coming together to question this proposed development. In southwest Pennsylvania we are all too familiar with the hazards of industries that exploit our resources and then leave us and the environment polluted, unhealthy and with only transitory benefits. These data centers consume vast amounts of electricity and water, with a real risk of depleting local available resources, while contributing to pollution and climate disruption.

These centers are central to advancing artificial intelligence, a technology parts of our country are promoting without fully understanding the consequences or implementing proper safeguards. Prominent AI engineers have called for a pause in the development of this technology until proper oversight and meaningful regulations are implemented.

AI should be developed thoughtfully and responsibly, not with a reckless “full speed ahead” mindset, which often serves only the corporate interests rather than benefiting the local community.

Thank you, Springdale, for pushing back. We will stand with you.
